CellMapper and LastBar are both built from what phones measure. CellMapper is about the network itself: where the towers are, which sectors and frequency bands they use. LastBar is about the person: where you can get a call out, and how to get there with no connection.
In short
| CellMapper | LastBar | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Mapping towers, sectors and frequency bands | Finding signal when you have none |
| Tower locations | Yes, worked out from what its users upload, with filters for band, frequency and bandwidth | Estimated tower positions where nobody has measured yet, marked as an estimate |
| Coverage map | Crowdsourced, per carrier and per band | Crowdsourced, per carrier, with the places measured with no signal |
| Guides you to signal offline | Not among its features | Find Signal: distance and direction to the nearest signal |
| Emergency numbers and help nearby | No | The numbers of the country you are in, and water, shelter and help on the map |
| Who it suits | Radio enthusiasts and people choosing a carrier or an antenna | Hikers, overlanders, farmers and anyone who goes out of range |
What CellMapper is good at
CellMapper describes itself as a cellular tower and signal map. Its contributors leave the app running and upload what their phones see, from which it works out where each tower stands and what its antennas transmit, carrier by carrier and band by band. Its Android app reads more of the radio than an iPhone allows. If you want to know which tower your phone is on, or which band a carrier uses where you live, it is the deeper tool.
What LastBar does differently
LastBar does not try to tell you about bands or sectors. It answers one question, often in a hurry: where is the nearest place my phone will work? It keeps the signal map of your area on the phone, so it works with no connection, and Find Signal points you there. For an emergency call it looks at every carrier, since an emergency call goes through on any network the phone can reach.
When to use which
- To understand the network, its towers and bands: CellMapper.
- To find signal when you have none, or to know before a trip where it ends: LastBar.
