A satellite messenger such as a Garmin inReach or a ZOLEO reaches help where no mobile network does. LastBar cannot do that. It does a different job: it tells you where the nearest mobile signal is, so you can make an ordinary call or send a message, and it costs nothing. If you go where no network reaches, carry a satellite messenger or a personal locator beacon. LastBar is no substitute for one.
In short
| Satellite messenger (inReach, ZOLEO) | LastBar | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Almost anywhere under open sky, by satellite | Where a mobile network reaches; it guides you there |
| SOS | Yes: an SOS goes to an emergency response centre that alerts rescue services and messages you back | No SOS of its own: it shows the emergency numbers of the country and the nearest place your phone can call them |
| Messages | Two-way text by satellite, within the limits of your plan | Uses your phone's own calls and SMS, once you have signal |
| Cost | A device to buy and a service plan for its satellite features | Free, with a Pro version bought once |
| Extra to carry | A device, to keep charged | Nothing: it is an app on your phone |
What a satellite messenger does
Garmin's inReach devices need an active subscription for their satellite features: SOS, two-way messaging and tracking. Pressing SOS starts an emergency response through Garmin's coordination centre, which contacts local rescue services and keeps messaging you. ZOLEO sends over the Iridium network: SOS alerts with your GPS position, two-way messages, and, paired with your phone, moves between mobile, Wi-Fi and satellite. Some countries restrict or ban such devices, so check where you are going.
Where LastBar fits
Most trips out of range are not emergencies: a car that will not start, a late arrival, a change of plan. For those, the nearest place with mobile signal is often a short walk or drive away, if you know where it is. LastBar keeps the measured signal map on your phone and points you there, with no connection. It also shows water, shelter, clinics, police and fuel around you, from OpenStreetMap.
In an emergency, the message is the same: if you have a satellite messenger and there is no signal, use it. LastBar can help you find signal for the ordinary call that follows, or for when there is no messenger in the group.
When to use which
- Going where no network reaches, alone or for days: carry a satellite messenger or a personal locator beacon, and LastBar as well.
- Road trips, day hikes, farms and the edge of the network: LastBar shows you where the last bar is.
